If you are looking to lose weight, here is a list of foods to avoid for weight loss.

1) Fast Food and Junk Food

Who doesn’t love a cup of ramen in the middle of the night or grabbing fast food after a long day of work?

The idea is that if a choice consists of refined carbohydrates, added fats, extra sodium, and added sugar, it’s likely high in calories and full of trans fatty acids and other preservatives and additives with little nutritional value.

These foods are loaded with everything that is bad for your body and can lead to heart disease, type II diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and even some forms of cancer.

Food items under this category include:

  • Fast food

  • Frozen food

  • Fried food, including fried potatoes like french fries

  • Candy bars

  • Snack foods like potato chips

  • Some “Meal replacements” like protein bars and granola bars

  • Soft drinks, including diet soda

  • Processed foods like instant noodles

  • Baked goods, even ones marketed as being “healthy” or “all-natural”

If you need are busy and need good fuel fast, you can keep healthy, convenient options stocked up in your fridge.

Boiled eggs, dark chocolate, Greek yoghurt, fresh fruit, and even chocolate plant-based milk can replace your usual french fries, potato chips, candy bars, and diet sodas that are all laden with saturated or trans fat, refined grains, and other chemicals and ingredients that may impede the road to fat loss that lasts.

Regular consumption of trans fats raises bad cholesterol and lowers good cholesterol which will lead to weight gain and overall deterioration of the body.

2) Sodas or sugar-sweetened beverages

Refined, added sugar in all forms, including high-fructose corn syrup, are all terrible foods for weight loss and will have a far-from-optimal impact on your glycemic index, leaving you more likely to crash and to over-indulge later on.

Consuming too much sugar has been shown to increase the possibility of becoming obese, developing metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and even falling victim to advanced cellular aging.

Fake sugars found in diet soda or “health drinks” have also been found to cause obesity when consumed in the long run.

Therefore, we recommend consuming fruits as part of your diet so that whenever you crave something sweet, you can grab a delicious piece of banana instead of a chocolate bar to ensure your weight loss efforts are maintained. You can even consider a weight loss supplement in Singapore to aid with your weight loss journey.

3) Alcohol

Alcohol is the first thing you have to avoid whilst on your weight loss journey.

It is high-calorie, offers no health benefits, and almost always makes you feel bad the morning after a binge-fest.

Although not all alcohol is sugary but they are still bad for you as they offer no health benefits to you at all. Whiskey and hard liquor have 0.0 grams of sugar but still contain empty calories that may be quickly stored as fat.

4) Hydrogenated oil

Hydrogenated oil such as margarine, vegetable oils, vegetable shortening, pre-made dough, fried food, coffee creamers, pastries, confections, and processed snacks are not recognized as being fit for human consumption therefore they should not have a place in your diet, especially when you are trying to lose weight.

A list of ingredients that should be avoided under this category include:

  • Partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil

  • Partially hydrogenated palm oil

  • Partially hydrogenated soybean oil

  • Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil

  • Trans fats

  • Trans fatty acids

  • Partially hydrogenated canola oil

It is advisable to cook at home whilst on a diet as you can control what you put into your meals.

Stick to using healthy fats like olive oil and avocado oil if you’re trying to lose weight.

5) Processed Meats

Similar to red meat, the over-consumption of processed meats has been shown to increase health problems such as stroke, heart disease, and even diabetes.

Processed meats are one of the top three foods to avoid if you want to lose weight and manage your blood sugar as it increases one’s insulin resistance overall after eating which can lead to metabolic dysfunction later on.

6) Store-Bought Sauces And Dressings

These sauces are delicious for a reason. They have tonnes of added sugar, high amounts of fat, preservatives, artificial stabilizers, and emulsifiers that transform delicious whole foods into their most unhealthy form.

If you love salads and other types of grain bowls with some sort of tangy or savoury sauce, one way to avoid weight gain is to simply mix your own homemade salad dressing or sauce up at home with simple, wholesome ingredients.

Our favourite salad dressings for weight loss include Greek yoghurt, tahini, avocado, vinegar, and healthy oils and fats for a lighter alternative.

7) Processed bread

White bread and other processed bread products made with white flour have been proven to spike your sugar levels in the body.

You can go for other options such as sourdough bread or whole grains that offer more protein, fibre, and micronutrients than white bread.

8) Dining Out (in general)

Food from restaurants may be misleadingly unhealthy as grilled meats may often be cooked with inordinate amounts of oil and sodium, and even salads will often be full of cheese, bacon bits, and, of course, dressings and sauces that are usually always very rich in fat and calories.

Some restaurants offer a list of the caloric content of everything on the menu. This can be helpful as you can find out how many calories you are actually consuming and most of the time, the calories are quite substantial as it contains sauces to make it taste good.

To avoid weight gain, it is best to just cook most of your meals at home when dieting. If you know what every ingredient going into the meal offers, you’ll never be in the dark about what you’re really eating. You’ll also be eating exactly what you like, the way you like it.

In a nutshell

It’s so easy to use the food on your plate to boost metabolism, increase your daily energy levels, and prevent unnecessary weight gain from setting in.

Whilst it is impossible to completely avoid foods that lead to weight gain, it is important to understand achieving a healthy and balanced diet is key to overall weight loss sustenance.

By choosing to eat more healthy foods, you’ll feel better, and you’ll be more focused and present for everything important in your life.
